Gather your documentation before scrapping your car. Photo ID, proof of address, and your V5 logbook will be required by the ATF.

Contact scrap car companies near you to get quotes, compare the prices offered for your vehicle, and then choose a facility to dispose of it. To get the best price, choose one close to your location. Upon settling on a price, you can schedule your vehicle for scrapping on a specific date. Some scrap car dealers may allow you to drop your car or you may arrange for them to pick it up.

Ensure that you only accept bank transfers or checks as payment. It is illegal to accept cash for scrap cars in England and Wales. Within seven days of scrapping, the ATF will send your Certificate of Destruction.

Give your V5 registration document to the ATF, but keep the yellow section labelled “Sell Transfer” and send it to the DVLA. If you do not have your logbook, notify the DVLA that your car has been scrapped. Include your details, your car’s registration number, model, and make. Indicate the name and address of the ATF where your car was disposed of, as well as the exact date when it was scrapped.

Not informing the DVLA that your car has been scrapped is against the law, and fines of up to £1,000 can be imposed. Make sure you double check your notification before submitting it to the DVLA if you miss any of the above details.
